FIP : Feline Infectious Peritonitis
Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a severe, immune-mediated disease in cats caused by a mutation of the ubiquitous feline coronavirus (FCoV). While many cats carry FCoV—which typically causes only mild diarrhea—a small percentage (approximately 5–10%) experience a mutation that allows the virus to infect white blood cells (macrophages), leading to FIP.
Why is FIP awareness important to us?
Artemis spent a lot of his life in various veterinary offices fighting feline coronavirus. Unfortunately, he was one of the 5-10% to experience the mutation which causes FIP. When it was discovered, there were no treatments available in the United States, and we had to say goodbye before Arty even turned 2. FIP is absolutely devastating to experience, and we want to raise awareness and hope for others affected.
Now treatments have been approved in the United States and FIP is no longer an automatic heartbreak in many cases.
What we are doing to help:
At After Artemis we have a special fund created in Arty's honor to help with the cost of FIP treatment for pet parents who cannot otherwise afford care.
Those in need in the Texas Panhandle, can have their veterinarian contact us to see if funds are available to help with treatment.
Each veterinarian has been given our contact information in the event they need to reach us for this purpose.
We cannot guarantee funds will always be available but we make fundraising for this special fund a priority, and do our best to help when we can.
Funds are only available for the cost of FIP treatments and not other veterinary services.
